How To Recylce Batteries

The City of Chicago has partnered with the Chicago Public Library and Chicago Walgreens to provide you with a place to recycle your household batteries. Batteries contain heavy metals and should be kept out of our landfills. Over time, they corrode and leak their contents into the soil and groundwater supply (nobody wants to drink battery acid).

Batteries accepted in the program include:
  • Alkaline Batteries (Duracell, Energizer, Ever Ready, etc)
  • Lithium Batteries (typically found in cameras)
  • All 'Button Style' Batteries (found in watches and small electronic devices)
  • Rechargeable Tool Batteries

You can take your batteries to any Chicago Public Library or Chicago Walgreens location during their hours of operation. Look for the tube/container, or ask at the desk.

Note: Wet cell batteries, such as car batteries, cannot be recycled throught this program; take them to the Household Chemicals and Computer Recycling Facility.
